Math and the Art of Spinning Records - June 4, 2009

I am currently taking an online course in Introductory Algebra (MATH 009), which is a pre-requisite for future upper level technical courses. A few days ago I submitted a "blog" in the Virtual Student Lounge:

"Math and the Art of Spinning Records

Here is the long story (referencing my introduction):

I've been a DJ for over 15 years now. I have just recently realized how mathematics can be used in the "art" of playing records.

One aspect deals with putting together compilations. When I made demo tapes/CDs, I'd be concerned with the max amount of working time I had: for cassettes it was 30, 45, or 60 mins on each side and for CDs it was 74 or 80 mins. I'd also be concerned with how many records I could fit into the demo before time expired. To ensure that I did not cut things off prematurely I'd end the "mix" no later than 30 seconds before my max allowed time (-00:30).

Another aspect is centered on "crowd control" and psychology but is rooted in pure math, and that's the tempo of the songs. My specialty is playing in the dance clubs where I can beat-mix (club mix) records by blending records of the same beat all night. Sounds simple, but it really is not. This is because of the tool that mix DJs must use: the beat count(BPM). The BPM is represented by the number of times a beat is stuck in 1 minute. For instance, a tempo of 124 BPM means that in 1 minute a beat is struck 124 times - this is my favorite tempo. Some records are slower while others are faster, and that is where one of a few decisions gets made. In my experience, the crowd and the theme of the venue determines the tempo that I play records in. If I have a crowd that likes the tempo slower then I can maybe play my 124 BPM records at the normal speed. My records that are 125 BPM could match the tempo with almost no problem , but if I have a 127 BPM record I'd have to adjust the "pitch shift" on the turntable to a slower speed and "convert" the 127 to a 124. Conversely, if I need to play at a faster tempo I could be playing at 128 BPM and I would have to shift some of my slower records to the faster tempo.

So, there you have it. I had always known that there would always be a use for math, and now that has been greatly amplified. The next time I get into a situation where someone questions the need for math or where it can be used I can simply say that it's not just used in business - it's used in entertainment also."

Note: my instructor will be using my "blog" for future classes...

Internet Radio Shows – programming notes - May 28, 2009

Spotlight Mix #1 - May 2009 - April 25, 2009

There comes a time in the course of a radio show when the host is at the mercy of the vibe of the show and the show takes on a life of its own. This is that time for SOUL REVIVAL. Since 2008 the Spotlight Mixes have been focusing on Chicago artists, largely due to Chicago being my hometown. This time the House drive will take us to New Jersey, where historically the vibe has been just as deep and vibrant as in Chicago. For two hours I intend to intrigue, amaze and simply overwhelm you with the seriously deep sounds that were produced by this master innovator of the House scene. His name is synonymous with pure genius. I invite you to join me as we take a “journey into sound”.

Tune in via on Saturday May 2, 11PM – 1AM, EST, when I will play jams by the one and only KERRI “KAOZ 6:23” CHANDLER!

Spotlight Mix - April 2009 - April 19, 2009

After a lengthy absence it is now time for another Spotlight Mix on SOUL REVIVAL. This time I will eliminate the suspense and simply state that the subject of my mix is a Chicago living legend and original member of the Hot Mix 5: Ralphi Rosario. He’s been the maestro of the decks and the remix for a number of years and his name is relevant worldwide. My mix will include some favorite gems.
Tune in via on Saturday April 25, 11PM – 1AM, EST!

Internet Radio Show Status - January 22, 2009

I bring great news! I am now able to broadcast the internet radio shows – starting this Saturday with “Soul Revival”. My PC issues have been resolved, although at a price (same result as before-files wiped out); as stated before I will persevere and move on. The process of moving on begins with the next internet radio show. Posted below is a reminder of what I have in store:

This month’s Spotlight mix will be a very special one. The subject of this mix is yet another House Music icon. This producer was responsible for some of the most influential and enduring House tracks, some of which became “anthems”. He was among the first to incorporate “real” instrumentation and songwriting, thus giving more credibility to the House Sound. [For the old school Househeads, his sound should be instantly recognizable] On a personal note, I must add that another reason for my excitement about presenting this mix is that he and I have the same alma mater: Lindblom Technical High School, in Chicago IL (this makes the second Spotlight Mix featuring a fellow alumni – Steve “Silk” Hurley being the first).

For this month’s Spotlight Mix I will be playing some of the deepest House jams produced by:

Location: Date: January 24, 2009
Time: 11PM – 1AM, EST

Internet Radio Shows on Hold - January 15, 2009

Due to technical difficulties (hardware/software issues) I will be unable to broadcast “Soul Revival” and “Pryme Vektor” at this time. Once the tech issues are resolved I will be able to resume both shows. In the meantime you can still check any of the other shows on They are guaranteed to entertain!

Soul Revival - 1st Show for 2009 - December 28, 2008

Foundation Mix – January 2009

In 1999 I had an idea. It was actually more of a dream: “If I were to have a club, how would I present my music and in turn, ‘brand’ my product?” As I put my ideas onto paper I wanted to be sure to cover three main areas: music styles, musical expression and target audience. The clincher: “…the people who understand the music are those who are elegant but have the willingness and readiness to sweat on the dance floor. They are considered to be a “mature” audience. These people are not afraid of the repetitive beats and rhythms, because they know that he beats and rhythms lead to something. They are not afraid of hearing something different from what is on the radio. They know how to party to soulful dance music. They are House People!” This concept/dream became “SOUL REVIVAL”.

In 2000 I recorded a promotional mix CD. This was a new adventure for me, and in order for me to capture the essence of my expression of House Music I gave the mix CD the appropriate title of “SOUL REVIAL”. During the next six years I recorded ten more volumes.

In 2006, only four months after recording Volume 11 of the “SOUL REVIVAL” mix CD series, I launched my internet radio show via At the risk of sounding clichés, “the rest is, as they say, history”. “SOUL REVIVAL” as an internet radio show began on Sep 9, 2006.

For the New Year I am presenting the SOUL REVIVAL “Foundation Mix”; with this mix I will be presenting the elements that I have always believed to be the true essence of House Music: (70s/Soul/Disco/Funk/Mainstream/Gospel/Vocals/Jazz/Blues/Percussion/Afro).

Location: Date: January 3, 2009
Time: 11PM – 1AM, EST

New Showtime - Soul Revival Mixshow - December 3, 2008

"Soul Revival" now has a new time: Saturday from 11 PM - 1 AM, EST.

Updated Status of Internet Radio Shows - November 18, 2008

The latest news:

Even though my computer access has been restored I am not yet connected to the site in the way that will allow me to resume my internet radio shows. Once I get reconnected I will be back in effect. I will be sure to inform you once that happens. In the meantime you can still check out all of the other shows on The roster of DJs is a real treat for the ears!

On a somber note, I was finally able to determine that many of the lost files are irretrievable and are gone forever. Most people would be seriously heartbroken by such news, and for a moment I was one of those people. I then compared the occasion to that of having other possessions “taken” from me, such as when my house was broken into several times during my tenure in England. I also thought about the time when I mailed some records to my APO address from my Chicago address and half of them mysteriously disappeared when the mail was damaged. During these two times (and several others) I had to simply recover/renew what I could, forget about my permanent losses, and move on. Once again I am forced to repeat that pattern of behavior. I was only able to recover a handful of files, so now I must renew what I can. Next, I must cut my permanent losses. I have already done that so the final step is for me to move on with life. In short, the loss of files was a mere inconvenience to me since I do have to start things from scratch. However, with Thanksgiving right around the corner I can say that I still have more than most people – the list of blessings can get lengthy if I really let it!

One final note: just know that with the insights I just gave, the internet radio shows will be even better than before!

Internet Radio Shows on Hold - Update - November 6, 2008

Here is the latest update on my computer drama:
I am now able to acces the computer again. I can get into Windows and check emails again. However, I still have a long way to go in terms of re-establishing my lost/damaged files. With my regular daytime duties keeping me busy my only option for getting this done will be on weeknights and weekends. I am hoping to be back up and ready to entertain you via the internet radio shows on the 18th of November with Pryme Vektor and on the 22nd of November with Soul Revival.

Wish me luck!

Internet Radio Shows on Hold - November 3, 2008

It is with regret that I must announce that the "Pryme Vektor" and "Soul Revival" internet radio shows on will be not be airing until further notice. My computer crashed and I lost ALL of my files.

I will send another notice once I get up and running again.

Spotlight Mix - October 2008 - October 21, 2008

After a short respite from SOUL REVIVAL it’s time for another Spotlight Mix, this time at the end of the month. This time I will be showcasing a person whom I consider to be an unsung hero in the Chicago House Scene. As a young child growing up in Chicago I was exposed to House Music via radio stations WBMX, WGCI and WKKC. These stations always played the hottest jams. There are a large number of tracks that, when heard, will always generate the same reaction as when I first heard them. This person was responsible for quite a few of ‘em! The production style was usually recognizable because of these elements: heavy bass, thumping beats, and a warm, soulful sound.
It is now time to reveal this mysterious figure…

Location: Date: October 25, 2008
Time: 10PM – 12AM, EST

“SOUL REVIVAL” Spotlight Mix: I will spin tracks produced/mixed by EDWARD “GET DOWN” CROSBY

Spotlight Mix – September 2008 - September 4, 2008

Once again it is time for another Spotlight Mix for the SOUL REVIVAL mixshow, and for September “school will be in session”. The subject of this spotlight mix is something of an icon in the Chicago House Music scene. He is an accomplished DJ, producer and remixer. He also has that talent that very few DJs possess – vocalist! In other words, he’s the total package. With that thought it should hopefully be easy to narrow down who the spotlight will shine on this Saturday; however, I shall end the suspense right now!

On September 6, 2008, 10PM – 12AM, EST, I will play some of my favorite tracks by the Minister of Sound: RON CARROLL.

In order to catch the show you must do the following:

Chicago Jacking Zone - August 25, 2008

I have just been inspired! This week’s SOUL REVIVAL offering will be yet another first for me as a DJ. This time around I will present Chicago classics from the “Jacking Zone” - that time in Chicago’s House Music history when ‘Jack’ was in the air and on the airwaves. I had presented Chicago classics in the past, in the form of mixed CDs but this time will be different. I will attempt to literally hot-mix the records, as was done back in the days of the Hot Mix Five, the Master Mix Six and Friday Night Audio (Chicago ‘heads should remember). With a two hour slot, there is no telling how many records I can fit in – I currently have up to 50 lined up and ready to blast. This should be a night no one will forget (especially me)!

On August 30, 2008, 10PM – 12AM, EST, I will JACK YOUR BODY!

In order to catch the show you must do the following:

Spotlight Mix - August 2008 - August 10, 2008

I was away for a month in my hometown of Chicago, with the intention of enjoying some vacation time. I managed to do so and now that I am back to work (on the Soul Revival mixshow, that is) I must continue with the spotlight mixes. The offering for August is one that I would consider to be an encore since this person had already been on showcase in 2007. It is only fitting that the mix be done shortly after his birthday. A lot was said preparatory to the Spotlight Mix in 2007, so now all I will state is that he'll be another year older and no worse for wear musically.

August 16, 2008 is the date, 10 PM - 12 AM is the time, is the location, and The "Legendary" Terry Hunter will be the focus of Soul Revival.

Don't sleep on this!

Mixshows on Hiatus - July 11, 2008

Pryme Vektor and Soul Revival will not be airing for three weeks due
to my vacation in my hometown of Chicago (yay). I'll be back in
effect on the 9th of Aug for Soul Revival. In the meantime, feel
free to check out any of the mixshows on There is an
awesome lineup of djs and any show that you tune in to is sure to get
you movin'.

Soul Revival Spotlight Mix – July 2008 - June 28, 2008

The Spotlight Mix for July promises to be another amazing set. June’s mix featured music touched by a Grammy nominee – this time I will feature a Grammy winner. He (in the same fashion as June’s spotlighted artist – Steve “Silk” Hurley) has worked with some of the biggest names in R&B music: Zhane, CeCe Peniston, Brownstone. More recently he has been consistently linked to R&B group Destiny’s Child and Gospel group Mary Mary. With these artists on his discography it becomes more evident that he needs no introduction…

On July 5th, 2008, 10PM – 12AM EST, I will profile music that has been touched by none other than the Grammy winner: MAURICE JOSHUA.

In order to catch the show you must do the following:

Upcoming Events in Utah - June 13, 2008

Soul Revival Spotlight Mix - June 2008 - May 31, 2008

The Spotlight Mix for June will be a continuation of House Music summer madness. This time I will shine the light on another living legend. Some of the tracks I will play will be instantly recognizable while others could be a surprise – in terms of this individual’s association with the tracks. This man is responsible for some of dance music’s most incredible offerings. I am personally proud to say that he and I are alumni of the same high school in Chicago: Lindblom Technical High School. This is significant (especially for the Chicago heads) because this was one of those schools where a large majority of the student body was a fan of House Music. To have this person be alumni is, simply stated, huge! He became the dance music “wrecking ball” in the early 1990’s, at the time when House Music began to gain national attention. The timing could not have been better since he gained prominence by remixing the hits for some of the biggest names in the game (Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, CeCe Peniston, and Prince, among others).

On June 7, 2008, 10PM – 12AM, the spotlight shines brightly on the four-time Grammy nominee: STEVE “SILK” HURLEY.

In order to catch the show you must do the following:

- log on to

Memorial Day Marathon – Birthday Party - May 16, 2008

Memorial Day is approaching and that signals the start of summer madness. That also means the Weekend Marathon courtesy of In order to catch the vibe log onto, Friday, May 23rd through Monday, May 26th.

After the marathon you can some more House Music action as I celebrate my birthday on May 27th. The birthday special will be during the Pryme Vektor slot at 10 PM, EST. I will be playing some of my favorite House records (old jamz as well as the current cuts I’m feeling), straight from the crates!

Feel free to check out at any time of the day. The roster is outstanding! – always in FULL EFFECT!
