DJ Purple (the duke of House): Mixes

Chicago Classics From The Vault

(DJ Purple [the duke of House])
February 8, 2001
"Forgotten classics from the city that built House. Circa 1987-1988"

This is the music I listened to during my high school years (1985-1989). I chose to do this project because I still had people approach me (even in 2001) and pay homage to the old school House artists and djs from Chicago.

1987 - 1988 was an interesting time in Chicago: D.J. International, TRAX and Hot Mix 5 were the premier independent record labels, the Hot Mix 5 of WBMX and the Master Mix 6 of WGCI were the hottest radio dj acts in the city, Acid House had just gotten into full swing and House music in general had begun to gain support outside the US, most notably in England. Some of the most popular tunes of the time were "The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body)" by Marshall Jefferson, "Love Can't Turn Around" by Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk and Jesse Saunders, "Jack Your Body", by Steve 'Silk' Hurley, and "Work It To The Bone" by LNR. These songs could easily be found on any old school compilation or mix cd, so I decided to raid my crates and dig out the truly "forgotten" records - records that had not been heard in a long time [I wanted this project to be the atypical "classic" mix].

Each track is a slice of what the Chicago Scene was like in the mid-eighties. This cd is only another chapter in the history lesson of the development of House Music.
